Return — Immersive Interactive Installation
BRIEFING
"Return" takes a complete ink-wash painting and deconstructs it into a generative process the audience can sense and take part in. Projection, sound, sensors and physical objects blend real and virtual to re-enact a painting's journey from blank canvas to finished work — turning the audience from viewer into someone who steps inside the painting and helps carry the story forward. The image begins on an empty canvas: branches slowly grow, leaves unfurl, petals drift in the wind, time and life quietly flowing through every ink stroke. As the scene comes together, a real birdcage on-site begins to tremble, birdsong rising from within — as if an unseen bird is waiting to be set free. At that moment, the act of opening the cage becomes the key link between the real world and the painted one. Once the cage opens, a virtual bird takes flight with a rustle of wings, guided by surround sound through the space, finally landing in the projected scene, perched on a branch. In this moment, physical action, sound and projected story all come together — marking both the completion of the artist's painting and life finding its way back to where it belongs. "Return" turns watching into participating, and a painting into an event. Releasing the bird isn't just an interaction — it's the closing ritual of the story. Somewhere between real and virtual, the audience bears witness together to an ink-wash painting's full journey: from blank page, to becoming, to finally coming home.
